Kirkland Updates its Shoreline Regulations

Informational meetings scheduled to kick off public involvement

Kirkland, WA Shoreline development regulations for the City of Kirkland were first adopted in the 1970s and are in need of being updated to match the current conditions of shoreline areas in the City and to be consistent with the State’s Shoreline Management Act. The City’s Shoreline Master Program applies to land within 200 feet of Lake Washington’s high water mark and within wetlands connected to Juanita Bay and Yarrow Bay. The Program consists of policies and regulations pertaining to shoreline use and development that affect issues such as the size and location of buildings, vegetation, conservation, shoreline stabilization, public access, views, and docks and moorage. To establish a list of preliminary issues and draft initial policy directions, the Houghton Community Council will conduct a meeting on February 25 and the Planning Commission will meet on February 28. Both meetings will begin at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, Kirkland City Hall, 123 Fifth Avenue. For more information on the City’s update process or to subscribe to receive email updates, go to www.ci.kirkland.wa.us (Search: Shoreline).

Because much of Kirkland’s shoreline areas have been developed, it is likely that the update will consider alternative approaches or design concepts for shoreline structures,

such as docks and bulkheads, when they are remodeled or replaced. Bulk and dimensional standards that govern the size and location of structures will be considered, as well as appropriate land uses.

The February meetings begin the study of new policies and regulations, which is anticipated to continue in 2008. Proposed amendments to the City’s program will be forwarded from the Planning Commission and Houghton Community Council to the City Council. The City Council, Planning Commission and Houghton Community Council agendas are available on the City’s website.

The Lakeview Neighborhood Association (LNA) will be making a $500 donation to the Save the Animals campaign.  As many of you already know this campaign is an effort to raise a total of $212,160 in order to purchase three of Kirkland’s most beloved bronze sculptures.  Of special importance to the Lakeview neighborhood is the Bounding Mule Deer at the intersection of Lakeview and Lake Washington. Information about this effort can be found at:

Save the Animals

If you are asking yourself how you can help with this effort, I’m sure the campaign will be happy to take your personal donation.  Another way you can help is to volunteer some time to an approved Kirkland Community effort. For every hour of volunteer time LNA receives the city gives us $14 towards our neighborhood ‘in-kind’ grant. If we accumulate enough volunteer hours in the next few weeks LNA will explore the possibilities of making additional donation to the Save the Animals campaign.

One upcoming event that requires a number of volunteers is the 4th of July Parade and Picnic. Information about volunteering for this can be found at.

Celebrate Kirkland

There were still a need for someone with a pick up truck to help put out barricades on the 1st, a big need for folks to pick up barricades after the parade (some with trucks), 8 more parade monitors and then the last need is for the picnic at Juanita Beach Park where they still need 1 more helper at noon, 2 more at 2:00pm, 3 more at 6:00pm and 5 at 8:00pm

If you do volunteer some hours please let me know so we can keep track of the time.

Thanks for your help in making Kirkland and the Lakeview neighborhood a great place to live.
